Years 7 - 8

One-off workshop

This workshop invites students to engage deeply with the meaning and purpose of an Acknowledgement of Country, using poetry as a powerful tool for reflection.

Through guided discussion and scaffolded activities, students will explore key questions about place, language, and cultural respect, developing an understanding of the significance of acknowledging Traditional Owners and the stories embedded in Country.

Inspired by proud Gunai woman Kirli Saunders' poetic Acknowledgement of Country, students will examine language features, structure, and symbolism in her writing. They’ll then be supported to plan and write their own Acknowledgement of Country, centred on care, connection and place.

This workshop weaves together literacy, creative expression, and First Nations perspectives, helping students develop confidence and respect in how they speak about Country.
